I have recently become aware of the variety of "green" search engines out there on the web. Here are ones that I found. Each one has their own definition of what being a "green search engine" is all about. I personally like the www.searchgreener.org the best, so far. Do you know of any? If you do please reply and tell me about it. I would love to bookmark them.
Searchgreener has a black background which is said to use less power than using a white background. They promote if we all save a little bit of energy by using their black search engine we can all save a lot of energy in the long run. Even though it is a Google search engine, Google is showing us that they are concerned about energy consumption and are trying to make a difference, one step at a time. This is similar to the discussion we had in my blog entitled, Contradictions in saving the environment.
Searchgreener also states:
"We are non-profit, offering free searching that is greener
* advertisers pay to be on our homepage and we re-invest the profit
* searchgreener invests in carbonoffsets to offset ALL emissions from its use
* we guarantee to offset our emissions so your search is greener"
Greenmaven is also a Google search engine but they provide website results that are green, conscious, and sustainable. I think that this is also great but most of my searches came up the same using either one. I think that if my searches are similar on both then I would try to use the search engine that is more energy sufficient (i.e., searchgreener.com).
However, I know of only these green search engines. I am hopeful that there are other earth friendly search engines out there. My hope is that this discussion will allow us to share our knowledge about the world wide web and all that is green within it.
The energy saves from a black background as opposed to a white one even on large scales (100000000000 of people per second) are minuscule at best; a bunch of small energy savers is not the answer to environmental safety, it just makes people feel better about themselves. As for a search engine in general, Google is by far the most comprehensive in every way; they donate millions of dollars a year to enviro-esque corps and have the most memory, best servers, etc. Treehugger.com says a black google would save about 750 megawatt-hours a year... not very much in my opinion, seeing as how i probably take that up in 1/2 a year between my electric & water bill. Since google is the largest search engine hands down, I find it safe to say that these other search engines are doing the environment no good in terms of energy saving. Sorry to be so negative, but if you feel compelled to take every small step, go for it, it's certainly easy enough to change your homepage or standard search engine.
